Half-minded or Kingdom-focused

Matthew 6:25-34

  • The Greek word for worry is a compound word from two words meaning “divide” and “mind”
  • Anxiety splits our energy between today’s priorities and tomorrow’s problems. Part of our mind is on the now; the rest is on the not yet. The result is HALF MINDED LIVING.

How have you experienced these effects of worry?

How has your worrying affected those around you?

  • Jesus says the solution to worry is to “seek God’s Kingdom and His Righteousness above all else”.
  • We’ve talked in this series about how God’s Kingdom is not a place or a group of people, but the domain or realm of God’s sovereignty.
  • The Greek word for righteousness stems from a word meaning “equity of character and action”.
  • This equity is inherently associated with fairness, impartiality and justice.
  • The Hebrew equivalent of this word from the Old Testament is “tsedequah”, which refers to people being in just and right relationships to each other.
  • Therefore righteousnesses can be thought of as character + action.
  • It is not simply personal morality but rather what we do with it out in the world.

How can having this kingdom focus help us with our worry?

What are specific ways that you can seek God’s Kingdom and righteousness this week?

In what specific opportunities and people do you see God working, and how can you join him in his work?
